The Nanung Peace Initiative (NPI) expresses deep concern over the unfortunate tensions that have arisen between members of the Dagomba and Nanumba communities at Konkomba Market in Accra.
As people of shared ancestry from the legendary Gbewaa and Gmantambu, Dagombas and Nanumbas are bound by ties of blood, history, and culture. These bonds define us as one family, and it is our collective responsibility to uphold the values of peace, unity, and mutual respect.
This brotherhood is further exemplified by the unwavering commitment of His Royal Majesty Ya Naa Mahama Abukari II, the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, and His Royal Majesty Nyelinbolgu Naa Andani Dasana Yakubu Abdulai, the Overlord of the Nanung Kingdom. Their consistent prayers and dedication to the growth and development of both kingdoms should inspire us all to strengthen our unity rather than succumb to division.
We must not let politics divide us as a family. Both NDC and NPP supporters share ascendance to our ancestral lineage, and political differences should remain within the realm of politics, without dragging tribal identities—Dagombas and Nanumbas—into conflict. It is essential to avoid creating a scenario where political disagreements spill over into tribal discord.
NPI acknowledges that misunderstandings can arise, but violence and conflict are never the solution. We call on all Dagombas and Nanumbas to exercise restraint and reflect on the values of love, brotherhood, and solidarity that have sustained our communities for generations.
We urge the following:
- Community Leaders: Chiefs, traditional authorities, and opinion leaders of both tribes should convene immediately and engage in dialogue to address the root causes of this misunderstanding and work toward a peaceful resolution.
- Religious Leaders: To offer spiritual guidance, prayers, and mediation to foster forgiveness and reconciliation.
- Youth and Market Leaders: To lead by example, maintain calm, and create an environment conducive to peace, understanding, and harmonious business interactions.
NPI also appeals to local authorities, law enforcement, and conflict-resolution bodies to act impartially in restoring calm and ensuring justice, fairness, and mutual respect for all parties involved.
As descendants of one ancestral father, we must ask ourselves: What would our forefathers, Gbewaa and Gmantambu, think if they saw us at odds today? They would remind us of the strength in unity and the importance of standing together, especially in times of misunderstanding.
NPI firmly believes that peace is the only path forward. We urge all Dagombas and Nanumbas to recommit to dialogue, respect, and the pursuit of lasting unity. Let this moment serve as a reminder to protect and cherish the bond we share as one people.
Together, let us work towards restoring peace at Konkomba Market and strengthening the enduring brotherhood that defines the Dagomba and Nanumba heritage.
